SPECIAL -
Mathew Henry CANVIN and George (7) CANVIN followed their Father Daniel (1) CANVIN to work on the canals as boatmen and we believe that their coal business was principally operated on or along the canals. The Buckingham Arm of the Grand Union Canal silted up many years ago so modern Leckhampstead no longer has a wharf but according to a brochure published at the time of the formation of the Grand Union Canal titled 'Arteries of Commerce' (reproduced for thre British Waterways Board) the wharf would have been about seven miles from the Cosgrove Junction. Recorded in the same brochure is Canvin Wharf which is placed on the Buckingham Arm a mile from the Cosgrove Junction. An isolated length of the canal may still be seen close to the A422 road by Leckhampstead.
