Click here to go to Family Directory to see who is or is not recorded IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIME VISITOR AND HAVE ARRIVED ON THIS PAGE VIA A SEARCH ENGINE PLEASE CLICK HERE CANVIN Preface This work documents as many members of the CANVIN Family as we have been able to trace. Members and their descendants who emigrated to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States are recorded. (Do you know of a Branch of the Family in Scandinavia?) We are seeking more information concerning the possibility that Mary Ann (4) CANVIN with her Husband George Arthur GREEN and Fanny CANVIN, both Daughters of George (7) CANVIN, may possibly have emigrated to South Africa in the early years of the twentieth century. Most of our information herein has been obtained from public sources and in order to avoid any controversy we have kept anecdotal information to an absolute minimum. The source of information has, where possible, been noted and any source notes may be found within an individual's biographical entry. In the Introduction sources may be found in the endnotes. Family Tree Notes Where possible both female and male lines have been traced. We have, when known, included the lines of those who married CANVINs. Names of Family Members are displayed with, when known, their full dates of birth, marriage/s and death. This and all other known information is recorded on the Biographical Page of each individual. Biographical Page Notes Where possible both female and male lines have been traced. We have, when known, included the lines of those who married CANVINs. Birth Names (Surnames) are shown in capital letters. Nicknames displayed in inverted commas are only those that are believed by us to have been used within the Family. Those Nicknames given principally by persons outside of the Family have not knowingly been included. We have used a bracketed number following a Given Name (First, Fore or Christian names) to separate those Family Members from others with the same Given Names; numbers have been issued on discovery and are not therefore in any chronological order. Please include this number when contacting us about such an individual. Please note that Given Names may on infrequent occasions vary from one authoritative entry to another, when this does occur the name of the Family Member here recorded is our choice (!) unless you suggest it should rightfully be otherwise. We believe the possibility that one or two authoritative entries were for whatever reason duplicated. We have also heard of a case (not yet a CANVIN) of an infant death where the Family chose to use the birth registration of an earlier unfortunate demised family infant for a later birth thereby causing confusion with both recorded age and gender. Where any of these or other registration anomalies are believed to have occurred we have inserted a Special Note. We have also included a Special Note where we believe that twins (and larger multiple births!) have occurred. A Special Note is also used to report anything else that we perceive to be of extra interest. We have assumed for the purpose of this work that the terms 'Baptize' and 'Christen' for those Family Members following the Church of England are similar name giving ceremonies however we are reminded that for those following some other Christian movements Baptizing may take place without a name giving element during the ceremony. The source of some individual information is dated after their death due for instance to the marriage of an offspring taking place after the death of a parent. All place names are situated within the United Kingdom unless otherwise stated. Excepting the 'General Register Office Index' entry where a Biographical Page entry includes a place-name it is accepted as the locality where an event occurred. .Post Codes have rarely been recorded for no other reason than they are a modern phenomena. Under
the entry 'Sources / Further' the three letters preceding 'General Register Office
Index' show the quarter of the year during which an entry has been recorded in
the 'General Register Office Index': The place name following 'General Register Office Index' is the Registration District of the Registration District Office in which that entry was recorded. Over the years Registry Offices have been reorganized so that many Districts have disappeared into larger ones and some have had their records split between different Offices, we have tried to record the original office. Please ignore any numbers that you find prior to a name in the yellow box on the Biography pages: These are being removed. We will be most grateful for and look forward to receiving any positive comments, constructive criticism, suggestions, additions or corrections that may arise from your perusal of this Family Tree & Biographical Directory. When you contact us it will help if you are able to quote the authoritative source of any information you send us however please do not hesitate to pass on information without a source. We are especially interested in Family photographs as we hope to eventually produce a picture gallery to accompany the Biographical Directory. (Any costs you incur will of course be happily reimbursed.) Please please do not send us the only photographic copy you have. To write that we are desperate for any authenticated information regarding the background of Richard (1) CANVIN and Ann HARRIS would be an understatement. We do believe, along with others, that Richard (1) CANVIN was born in Somerset but this regrettably remains, for us, simply speculation as unfortunately we have so far been unable to locate an authoritative source / connection. We are also aware that there may be an earlier marriage. We have not yet found a Surname Dictionary containing the name CANVIN. Our own attempts to trace the derivation of the name have only managed 'Welsh river valley' and this was via an uneducated deconstruction of the Welsh language. Please has anyone a proper learned idea? As and when we can we are collecting copies of CANVIN Registration and Probate documents and these are noted. We will happily search them for any queries, such as witnesses, you may have. A wide-ranging database is being created containing Family and associated names from across the world. It is hoped to eventually include the names of witnesses to weddings, those registering births and deaths, trustees, executors etc. Should you have a name connected to the CANVINs that you are researching please feel free to contact us as we will happily pass you any information we may possess. We sincerely hope that you will find this work as enjoyable to read as we are finding in its ongoing production.
